The Mike TeeVee clip here is very relevant to Fitzpatrick's argument. I did a bit of research and happened to find both the original Roald Dahl book lyrics for Mike TeeVee (some of which were used in the 2005 movie clip you have here) and the movie adaptation starring Gene Wilder. What's interesting is how only the importance of book reading is slightly mentioned in the Gene Wilder version:
"What do you get from a glut of TV A pain in the neck and an IQ of three Why don't you try simply reading a book Or could you just not bear to look..."
What's more interesting, though, are the number of Dahl's lyrics left out concerning the importance of reading in Burton's version, the clip you have here. This is probably because the lyrics would not make as much sense when being fed from Oompa Loompas on a movie screen, an image-based medium:
"'All right!' you'll cry. 'All right!' you'll say, 'But if we take the set away, What shall we do to entertain Our darling children? Please explain!' We'll answer this by asking you, 'What used the darling ones to do? 'How used they keep themselves contented Before this monster was invented?' Have you forgotten? Don't you know? We'll say it very loud and slow: THEY...USED...TO...READ! They'd READ and READ, AND READ and READ, and then proceed To READ some more. Great Scott! Gadzooks! One half their lives was reading books!"
I'll bring the lyrics in to class. You'll get a kick out of them.
